Alexander Wang's Studio by Ryan Korban

Claire Sullivan - Monday, March 01, 2010

Thanks to The Selby, here's a sneak peek inside the New York studio of fashion designer of the moment Alexander Wang. The interior design is by new young thing Ryan Korban, and while there is nothing super new about this look, it still manages to tick all the right boxes by using a well edited selection of furniture pieces that give the space a unique character.

James Bond set designer Ken Adam

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, November 03, 2009

Arguably more influential to the Bond aesthetic than any of the great actors who played the lead role, Academy Award winning set designer Ken Adam  has created some of the most visually impressive back drops ever in film design. Adam was responsible for the some of the most elaborate and memorable Bond sets from the 1960s and 1970s. I found these inspiring examples of both renderings and completed sets over at our friends at Wallpaper.

Paisley Screen by LZF Lamps

Claire Sullivan - Monday, September 28, 2009

Paisley, designed by LZF Lamps at the Luis Eslava Studio is a modular wooden screen made up of sinuous geometric shapes which convert the light coming through it. Painstakingly lengthy to make - its detailed woodwork sets it apart from other room dividers.  Its modular design also allows it to work effectively in a variety of spaces.

Available locally from here.

Two-time Academy Award winner and globally renowned costume designer Catherine Martin (who is perhaps best known for her work on the movie Moulin Rouge) has collaborated with Designer Rugs to produce a series of rugs. Celebrating flora, fauna, children's patterns and lace designs, she offers an interesting twist to Designer Rugs' collections. All rugs are hand-tufted in 100% New Zealand wool.

Campana Brothers for Edra

Claire Sullivan - Wednesday, April 22, 2009

Love them or not, you cannot discount the interest drawn by the ever controversial Campana brothers. Today at the fair crowds gathered around the newly released Cipria Sofa's (as shown above). Designed to be added to list of iconic pieces the brothers have produced, the Cipria is constructed from nine cushions fixed to a metal frame, Each cushion is covered in fake fur and comes in varying colours  and fur lengths. No doubt the avid Campana collectors will be pleased. Edra is available from Matisse.

Poltrona Frau archives revisited

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, April 21, 2009
The iconic Chesterfield is always deserving of a revisit in my opinion, and this year, the Italian powerhouse Poltrona Frau have reissued one of their most traditional and well loved icons. Poltrona Frau are most renowned for their craftsmanship and zest for perfection, these pieces are no exception with each made painstakingly by hand. Poltrona Frau is available locally at Georgigregg.

David Trubridge Design

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, April 21, 2009

Arguably New Zealand's most infamous design exporter, David Trubridge is once again impressing the crowds in Milan. Trubridge became somewhat of a household name in Italian design circles when his now ubiquitous coral light was first shown back in 2002. I for one recall seeing the coral light all over Milan at  my first Salone visit back in 2004.

This year Trubridge has taken an exhibition space in the ever popular area, the Zona Tortona. Sharing the same off-site postings as the likes of Marcel Wanders and Tom Dixon, Trubridge is attracting all the right attention from the crowds looking for the new and cooler alternatives to what's on display in the main fair pavilions.

Keeping with this years Euroluce theme Trubridge has developed a series of three lights based on the Maori legend of Tane. The lights vary in composition materials, and all come flat packed for easy shipping to anywhere in the world.

Maison Martin Margiela in Milan

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, April 21, 2009

One of our favourite visionary fashion designers Martin Margiela is making the obvious move into furniture and interiors with an installation at the Milan Salone. Margiela followers will be familiar with their clearly recognisable and often copied white interiors within their fashion boutiques. Their genius use of every version of white conceivable have produced some humorous and utterly unique interiors with ambience. It comes as not too much of a surprise then that after constant pressure from fans worldwide Maison Martin Margiela are taking on the world of interiors.

The Milan installation as shown above is actually a recreation of the fashion houses interior design studio in Paris. Walking through the space this afternoon it's easy to get excited by their forthcoming range. Employing similar techniques that we've seen them use in their fashion lines such as screen printing, a range of rugs and wallpapers will carry images of french baroque doors and window frames, while a swiss ball is covered with small mirrors creating a sporty disco ball.

Further to the lines in development, Maison Margiela will also  offer their interior design services with the intension of working in projects such as hotels, bars and restaurants.

Margiela's fashion line  is available locally at Zambesi. For more information on the interiors line go here.

Oversized and fun

Claire Sullivan - Sunday, March 29, 2009

Knitting made a bit of a come-back recently but we have never seen it on such a grand scale. Dutch designer Bauke Knottnerus designed the 'phat knit' series in 2008. This is knitting you can sit on, lie on, lounge on, snuggle up on - in other words, it's a unique take on something that filled (some of our) childhood memories.

You would need mighty knitting needles to get this underway - and in this case, they did. The pieces are actually made by oversized needles that are used to produce a variety of objects from carpets to seats.

I wonder if the inspiration for this series came from the designer's own last name...

Mid Century Modern

Claire Sullivan - Monday, March 23, 2009

Five years of living in New York has left me with an insatiable passion for American mid century modern design. This Milan apartment featured in Elle Décor, and owned by Chicago based Interior Designer Nate Berkus, represents everything that I love about the mid century style. This place exudes class. Lucky for us local company Flaunt ID offer a fantastic selection of American and South American mid century pieces. In fact they recently had available a pair of fantastic Milo Baughman chairs, similar to the ones featured here.

 Check it out here. www.flaunt-id.com
