1950s Home Remodeled by Hollywood Couple

Anna Kidman - Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Photos: Elle Decor.

Whilst a beautiful house can be many things: architecturally designed, filled with the latest furniture, and walls lined with art; a home, on the other hand, needs to reflect something in addition to all of this: the owners' personality. This home in Hollywood, which belongs to Lynn Harris, an executive vice president of production at Warner Bros and her husband that also works in media, has been remodeled after a series of botched attempts from previous owners. Where shutters once cluttered almost every room, they've removed them to allow the light back inside. The floors are highly polished concrete and wood, and the walls have all been painted white. The owners describe their home as 'an expression of [their] love' for one another, so that their children could grow up in a really 'well-designed environment so they'd learn to appreciate art and beauty.' The furniture within the home is almost a living gallery of some of the top design from the 20th century: Signature chairs by Hans Wegner and Jeffrey Bernett, a Warner Platner table and Harry Bertoia barstools among others.

Re-loved: Designer Stories Exhibition

Claire Sullivan - Monday, August 09, 2010

Australian architect Chris Bosse has sliced up the panton chair as part of the re-loved: designer
stories exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney. Bosse, director of architectural firm LAVA, is one of several designers commissioned by the powerhouse to use a pre-loved chair to tell a story about a piece of furniture they love.
He chose a design classic that relates to current design and manufacturing techniques. The Panton chair  by Danish designer Verner Panton (c1967) was a departure from traditional design and manufacturing techniques. it anticipated the digital revolution by 30 years and is the first freeform, organic molded piece of furniture.

Fabien Baron Rugs

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, August 03, 2010

The carpet collection is inspired by Liquid Light, a single-volume monograph assembled from the personal work of Fabien Baron. Spanning twenty years and two continents, the collection draws from over 2,000 photographs taken on the coasts of Eastern America, Western Europe, and the Mediterranean. The book chronicles Baron's transformation of concrete, geographical sites into abstract tableaux. Utilizing long exposure for each image, Baron reveals the most essential aspect of his subject matter: light.
The process of making the rugs is complex, the wool is dyed and lightened by a slight percentage so the transition and fading of color is subtle. The collection is available in charcoal, stone grey, fire, grass green, ink blue, orange, olive, and gold.

The Fabien Baron rug collection is available here.

Glass Pavilion by Steve Hermann

Claire Sullivan - Monday, July 19, 2010

Paying clear homage to Mies van der Rohe's classic Farnsworth House is the recently completed Glass Pavilion by Steve Hermann. Located in Montecito, California the house not only references the minimal lines of the 1951 classic house, but also incorporates van der Rohe's  famous use of continuous bookshelf marble feature walls in his other iconic (and my personal favourite) building - the Barcelona Pavilion. One would assume that no expense has been spare with this home - particularly when we noted the serious collection of classic cars on display in the basement.

Living with Vintage

I found these images whilst cleaning up my computer. I'm not sure where they are from - but I know that I've kept them as great examples of living with vintage furniture.

Casa no Geres - Portugal

Claire Sullivan - Friday, July 09, 2010

The first completed project by Correia/Ragazzi Aquitectos has received its fair share of international awards - it's easy to see why. The structure presents a bold statement on the landscape that could at first glance easily look like an accident - perhaps a shipping container slipping down a hillside? One part of the building is buried inside the hill while the other end overhangs the river below.

The Mashup by Kymo

Claire Sullivan - Thursday, July 08, 2010

Designers Eva Langhans and Thomas Follner have reinvented age-old carpet making for the 21st century. Using worn and rugged oriental carpets as raw materials, The Mashup rugs are made by first stripping the originals to their bare essentials. The threads are refined using various methods, and are then reassembled into a new sophisticated patchwork pattern.
