Maison Martin Margiela at Les Sources de Caudalie

Claire Sullivan - Monday, March 01, 2010

A year after we first introduced you to Martin Margiela's foray into interiors (launched at the Milan Salone in 2009) we have a completed interior project by the fashion design house. Les Sources de Caudalie is a luxury spa in the Bordeaux region of France. The "Ile aux Oiseaux" suite sits apart from the hotel in an idyllic stilt-mounted cabin. Filled with calfskin rugs, cracked mirrors and antique furniture, and amidst the typically Margiela white-on-white decor, a shocking flash of scarlet comes in the form of a giant pair of lips—a replica of Salvador Dali’s classic Mae West Sofa from 1936.

Celebrated for its appropriateness during the economic climate the new style of luxury hotel has gone on to garner traction all over the globe. The W Hotel chain of cosmopolitan hotels has always been commited to offering it's discerning guests a cohesive contemporary design experience. While the chain has been around for over a decade, it's great to see that their newest addition, the W Hotel Atlanta, still remains true to the brands aesthetics. Incorporating design icons such as the Platner chair, and mixing them with new design pieces, the designers have achieved a sophisticated interior that still relates to the W Hotel's international design aesthetic.

Helix Hotel Abu Dhabi

Claire Sullivan - Friday, April 10, 2009

New York based Lesser Architecture have won a competition to design the Helix Hotel to be built in Zayed Bay, Abu Dhabi. The Hotel is positioned adjacent to the currently under construction and highly anticipated serpentine Sheik Zayed Bridge designed by Zaha Hadid. The name Helix makes reference to the staggered floor plates which will keep public spaces always in flux with no two rooms positioned across from one another having exact views to the other side. As with most hotels in this region, luxury is paramount, a reversed fountain will drop water from the ceiling down through the void into the lower lobby. The roof top will feature a full sized glass bottom swimming pool where the swimmers will be visible from eight floors below at ground level.

Hotelicopter

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, April 07, 2009

Just when you thought that the dreaded "R" word was having an impact on all things related to luxury travel, along comes the Hotelicopter. Featuring 18 luxuriously appointed rooms, designed for adrenalin junkies seeking a truly unique, and no doubt costly travel experience.
600 thread count sheets, turndown service, fresh flowers, spa, on board yoga studio, tea garden and Japanese garden with Koi pond are among the vast list of amenities available to the onboard guests.
All sounds too good to be true really! And it is - the Hotelicopter has to be one of the best April Fools hoaxes in some time. The online design blogging community have gone crazy for this genius concept, which is just that a concept. Check out more of the elaborate scheme here.

SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills

Claire Sullivan - Thursday, March 19, 2009

I am a hotel snob. But to be fair, good luck working in this industry and being content with the plethora of everything polyester and pastel at the local Holiday Inn.

So when the ubiquitous Philippe Starck throws his design prowess into a new hotel, folks like me start checking their airpoints balance. The new SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills looks, to my highly critical eye, to tick all of the Design Hotel aficionado’s style boxes. Starck has ditched his previous obsession with all things white and clinical, in favour of a new eccentric style.  With exclusive custom designed Cassina furniture adorning the guest rooms, and a Moss design boutique in the foyer, this could definitely be my home away from home.
