Hervé Van der Straeten

Claire Sullivan - Wednesday, March 10, 2010

I visited the incredible Galerie Van Der Straeten in Paris several years ago, and was immediately obsessed. French furniture designer Hervé Van der Straeten makes all of his unique pieces with his own hand, creating bold forms by using innovative materials with an exquisite execution. Read about his latest collection - Manipulations here.

Noon Studio

Claire Sullivan - Friday, February 26, 2010

After studying industrial product design in France, french designers Gautier Pelegrin and Vincent Taïani joined forces to create Noon Studio. With an emphasis on a clean and minimalist aesthetic, they consider their philosophy a simple one; wanting to create a harmonious environment for man and object to co exist.

Fornasetti Vases

Claire Sullivan - Friday, February 19, 2010

If you've ever felt like you're being watched, these might not be the best addition to your home. Originally created by Piero Fornasetti in the 50s, but having never made it into production, it was with some fortune that Piero's son found them in the cellar. Years later, Italian company Bitossi Ceramiche has released the vases in a new limited edition collection. This collection will shortly be on display until April in the Spazio Fornasetti, Corso Matteotti in Milan. The only question is, who will be watching who.

Fornasetti is available locally from here.

Sketch Furniture Design by Front Studio

Claire Sullivan - Thursday, November 26, 2009

Swedish design studio Front has developed a method to materialise free hand sketches. Each pen stroke is recorded in the air with Motion Capture and converted into 3D digital files. After which, the sketches can be materialised through rapid protoyping into real pieces of furniture.

Simon James at The Department Store

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Along with hundreds of other design savvy Aucklander's, we made our way over to The Department Store in Takapuna last Friday night to celebrate the opening of the new concept store. A collaboration between some of the city's best design retailers - Simon James Design, Black Box Boutique, Flotsam & Jetsam, Karen Walker, Steven Marr, and Lucy and the Powder Room. We are super impressed by both the space itself and all of the fabulous pieces on offer. It's a must visit.  The Department Store concept is definitely something that we'd like to see more of around Auckland. When you visit be sure to check out Simon James Design, where you'll find excellent new design offerings from New York based designers Areaware (as shown above.)

Derlot Designs Landing Soon

Claire Sullivan - Friday, September 18, 2009

Landing on New Zealand shores shortly are some of our favourite designs this season. Australian design company Derlot (headed up by Alexander Lotersztain) are quite clever in their approach. They offer a range of products spanning commercial and residential - and it's their ability across seating like Twig - a seat that resembles the letter 't', that enforces their ability to come up with unique ideas in an industry that can be cluttered - so often with the same.

It will be available locally from here.

Re-Stitch, old denim - new beanbags

Claire Sullivan - Monday, September 14, 2009

We've fallen quite hard for Australian design firm Derlot. Not only do they have interesting products, they are also well-styled in a quirky manner. Take the Re-Stitch project for example - designer Alexander Lotersztain sourced old denim (the stuff that's typically thrown out) and put it to good use making these beanbags.

Available locally from here.

Ferruccio Laviani's Evolution Dresser

Claire Sullivan - Saturday, July 25, 2009

For the couple that can't decide between old and new, this could be a good compromise. Designed by Ferruccio Laviani for Emmemobili, 'Evolution' is a dresser which does just as its name suggests: evolves. It moves from antiquated at one end to linear and minimalist at the other. On second thoughts, it doesn't seem like a design compromise to us.

Salvador Dalí Black Label Collection

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, May 26, 2009

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the death of  the great Salvador Dalí, Spanish company Barcelona Design are paying homage by producing limited edition pieces from the surrealists past furniture collection. All items are finished in black, with aged black patina on casted brass, black marble, darkened gold leaf, and dyed lime wood satin for upholstery. The collection will be available in limited numbers of 105 of each item, reflecting the age that Dalí would have been in 2009. I am totally in love with all of these pieces. This is the 'furniture as art' trend at it's very best.

Diesel does design....interior design.

Claire Sullivan - Wednesday, April 22, 2009

Yet another fashion house is throwing its design prowess  into the world of interiors. I'm not sure how I feel about all of this cross pollination, and why have we not seen any interior designers trying their hands at fashion...or have we? The Italian jeans giant Diesel have launched a furniture range with Moroso and The Rock  lighting for Foscarini. Stay tuned for any news on furniture designers doing fashion, I'm keep a look out.

Poltrona Frau archives revisited

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, April 21, 2009
The iconic Chesterfield is always deserving of a revisit in my opinion, and this year, the Italian powerhouse Poltrona Frau have reissued one of their most traditional and well loved icons. Poltrona Frau are most renowned for their craftsmanship and zest for perfection, these pieces are no exception with each made painstakingly by hand. Poltrona Frau is available locally at Georgigregg.

Maison Martin Margiela in Milan

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, April 21, 2009

One of our favourite visionary fashion designers Martin Margiela is making the obvious move into furniture and interiors with an installation at the Milan Salone. Margiela followers will be familiar with their clearly recognisable and often copied white interiors within their fashion boutiques. Their genius use of every version of white conceivable have produced some humorous and utterly unique interiors with ambience. It comes as not too much of a surprise then that after constant pressure from fans worldwide Maison Martin Margiela are taking on the world of interiors.

The Milan installation as shown above is actually a recreation of the fashion houses interior design studio in Paris. Walking through the space this afternoon it's easy to get excited by their forthcoming range. Employing similar techniques that we've seen them use in their fashion lines such as screen printing, a range of rugs and wallpapers will carry images of french baroque doors and window frames, while a swiss ball is covered with small mirrors creating a sporty disco ball.

Further to the lines in development, Maison Margiela will also  offer their interior design services with the intension of working in projects such as hotels, bars and restaurants.

Margiela's fashion line  is available locally at Zambesi. For more information on the interiors line go here.
